{I contacted Lisa as I was feeling a great deal of anxiety about jumping. I started riding in my early 50s and had only been taking lessons a few years. I was feeling very anxious about jumping as I was riding at an eventing barn. Since working with Lisa I feel like I am listening more to the horse I ride in my lessons. There is truly no downside to the coaching especially as Lisa helps with mindfulness for broader application to life. She taught me also a lot about riding which was great, especially as a new rider. But I imagine for people riding throughout their lives, Lisa's skill set is so deep and vast that she is an asset to anyone interested in a more mindful approach to their riding and life. Lisa has such a pleasant demeanor, very caring and thoughtful. But she also makes you work to think through things that really helps when you are serious about mindfulness. It can't be delivered on a silver platter but if you work with Lisa, you will have a healthier mindset for riding and life in general.

{I was looking to incorporate more mindfulness and sports psychology into my team training. I think the biggest think I took away as a coach was to focus on the learning mindset- no matter if things went as hoped or became more "learning moments" in the show ring. I now try to have my students focus first on the positive of their rides and instead of getting upset and hard on themselves (and myself, for that matter) when things aren't perfect, use that to see where to focus our training energies. I think the attitude in competitions is way better on all sides and the kids can get less stressed. I am less concerns with mistakes and try to help them figure out what skills they need to work on at home to improve performance. The most positive takeaway from the clinic was learning to create a positive mindset and learning focus. Being in the right headspace and being able to calm yourself is so important in riding. Everyone can benefit from a clinic with Lisa. I knew all of these things from my own psychology background, but it's so easy to forget when you're in a competitive environment, but when your focus stays on the process, you can never lose!

{I decided to look into coaching because of an unpredictable life change that I felt would jeopardized the longevity of my current career in the horse industry. Before starting the process I felt a bit stuck and sightly overwhelmed at the thought of a career change. I was hopeful that maybe a couple coaching sessions would help guide me in the right direction. A couple of coaching sessions has turned into 3 years of coaching and I plan on many more! Lisa has helped me overcome and work through all the different things life can throw at you! The experience with Lisa exemplifies the profound impact that dedicated coaching can have on individual growth and the realization of one's full potential.

{My trainer encouraged me to participate. I hoped to gain new experiences and knowledge. I rode with Lisa not long after a tough fall. She helped me regain my confidence and focus. I try to remind myself of all the things I learned or improved on and use them with my rides. If I put my horse right to work it helps both of us focus. I take away so many helpful things after each clinic. I get great advice and learn something new with each clinic and they continue to help me grow with my riding. Lisa is very kind and understanding. She is easy to talk to and makes me feel comfortable. I can ask questions and she always has the perfect answer that helps me move forward.

{I was excited to have Lisa help my clients work thru showing nerves and preparing them for our summer show schedule. I love now using some simple jumps/poles throughout show course we set at home for the riders to take a breath and regain confidence. Since the clinic, I now try to always start and finish with the positives! I learned to be more positive and create more of a dialogue with my riders. Lisa gave all my riders skills and confidence to pursue new goals and cope with the ups and downs of horse shows.

{I can’t express how much Lisa has helped me grow my business, because of her I am so much more confident and comfortable in who I am as an instructor/professional business owner and what I have to offer. She has been a great resource, not only for improving my personal riding skills, but also that of my students. I frequently bring Lisa in for clinics, this allows her the chance to view my student’s progress/any struggles they are having. After conversation at the end of the sessions, she helps me come up with lesson plan to bring their riding to the next level or help them overcome mental road blocks. I also frequently reach out to Lisa to help me problem solve, when I am dealing with a difficult client situation. She helps me understand their point of view, but also verbalize my response to them in the way that will keep communication professional.

{I sought out coaching because I am a first-time business owner. My objectives were to become more definitive about what my business would represent and how it would operate to its fullest potential. Through the coaching I have discovered that your approach (to business, horse training, people, finances, the list goes on forever) begin with your thought process and it is easy to become consumed in the ocean of life. We have delved into finessing the approach behind many situations to analyze the best way to proceed forward in the future. This has allowed me to look forward to what comes! Lisa also provides construct approaches to building the business as it progresses. This includes where to start, what steps to take next, planning on how to take the steps, and proper execution of the plan; including managing bumps along the way! When I started with Lisa my goals were something I jotted down on the computer. She asked me to write down what exactly I would want, all the way down to the gritty details of what it would look like. It is amazing how things can work out. As I have gone along with having her coaching I think she has really pushed me to succeed in many ways. I like that the meeting is wherever you are! In the bustle of the horse business there isn't a lot of flexibility for scheduling so it is nice that it can happen mid-day while I’m riding, in the wash stall, mucking, etc. I would definitely recommend it because this is not an easy job and it is really nice to have someone to encourage and help when things seem impossible. My biggest achievement is not a specific moment but the overall growth and development I've experienced with Lisa's coaching. Breakthroughs have come through managing difficulties with mindful thinking and being able to handle the surprises of the horse world with confidence. Lisa has pushed me to expand myself professionally in order to grow my clientele.

{I was looking to unlock my body and tap into my horse more through riding in a clinic with Lisa.. I learned to communicate better and be more effective., as well as attempt to let go of some of my perfectionism. In trying to unlock myself, I inadvertently was able to unlock the horse. I remember the feeling of power and freedom beneath me when I was able to effectively balance us both. I often remember that feeling as I am able to recreate it now with most my equine partners. I have been able to find that same feeling on multiple different horses and use the techniques taught to help bring my young ones further along. I have noticed that I am more looking to reward the small things within the ride. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Make any small improvement for the horse a big deal and they will generally improve quicker and understand better. I learned to stop trying to be perfect, and allowing yourself to make mistakes is how you learn and grow. I also learned to be patient and remember the horse had no idea what your asking for, so it’s important to remain calm and reward the small stuff. I have learned to help students by leaving more room for them to feel and not try to over explain and take away from their ability to be independent thinkers and react based on their feel. A clinic with Lisa can be mind-opening and a good way to get an outside perspective to allow for more growth.

{When I started the Mindful Instructor program, I was hoping to gain some tools to help riders deal with mental blocks of riding. I now feel like I have a better understanding of ways to help riders through their mental blocks. At first there was a lot of information and it seemed overwhelming, but the program was organized in a way that it was easy to read a lesson, do the worksheets and apply it to my lessons. Sharing experiences with other trainers. I now think more during lessons about way I could help a rider struggling and remind them to stary positive even if they didn’t necessarily love their ride. Everything was organized and easy to follow. I liked the dialogue we were all able to have. It was helpful to hear other trainer’s problems and hear how you helped them navigate those issues. I think this work is perfect for trainers, riders and even parents! Anyone who has some mental blocks, including off the horse. This program met my expectations and more!

{My main problem is self-confidence. The feeling that I can always do better and need to make things perfect. Also, I have anxiety when riding my leased horse in the winter/spring, when he is more “exuberant”, versus during the summer/fall when he is an angel (for the most part). It was fun to experience it with people I currently ride with, as well as new people. Talking about our issues/concerns/etc. with you, as well as, commiserating with each other helped me to realize my “problems” are pretty common. It was nice to have your reassuring input, and wonderful new techniques to try when having issues or even use before they arise. I began to focus on the good or positive things and not zero in on the negative. Learned to take a deep breath and slow everything down, in order to change negative outcomes, or make them less negative (if that makes sense) . My riding has become much better, and my outlook in general. There are times I find myself using some of your techniques on others that are having a negative/depressed moment. (Think about the good things, etc.) It was interesting to see the dynamics of our group. We had members that were bubbly and out-going, some that didn’t want to talk about themselves at all, and others that were reluctant at first, but broke out of their shell by the end. Some of the “homework” was hard at first, but by the end was starting to become second nature. Recording a video and talking about oneself is not easy . This program would work for all types of people. It’s interesting to see how others work through their struggles each in their own way. We may all have a similar struggle, but we work through it in a different way, and that’s ok.

{I had the pleasure of hearing Lisa Eklund’s “Design Your Path to Change.” Her program is eye-opening and engaging. Boy does she NAIL it, when talking about horse people. If any of you take lessons from someone who heard this presentation, you will probably hear “stolen phrases.” Do yourself a favor and hear her speak or go to a clinic.

{I enjoyed the program. It was good to talk through things with others who understood horses. It is hard to discuss horse issues with people who don't actually ride. I found the feeling of support and knowing people were being nonjudgmental very helpful. It gave me more confidence in my riding. It also gave me ideas to work on to improve my confidence in myself regarding horses in general. I felt I didn't know as much as others because I did not ride much as a child and was not in pony club. The program helped me come up with a plan to start learning the information I didn't know so that I would feel more confident at the barn. The program is very helpful to talk through issues you have with horses and get lots of different ideas/opinions from others. It also gives you a variety of information/readings on mindfulness and helps you understand what that means. The suggestions for meditation were also helpful.

{I was looking to build a stronger, more positive mental mindset and learn how to embrace my fears and, lean into them as growing experiences. I realized that I need to be ok with things I'm working through, put in the work to become mentally stronger. Having a coach guide and support me kept me focused on growing interpersonally. I've been riding for six years and have owned by horse for two years. I had an accident one year ago . Since then, it's been a journey to overcome that fear of falling off and hurting myself again. The PTSD was real and it flooded my brain with all sorts of stories including IF my horse was the right match for me. At the time of the accident, I owned him for one year. I've worked hard over the past year to take things in spoonfuls. I have learned to break down how to get my horse checked into me when he's scared and for me to manage my own anxiety and stay as calm as possible in the moment. The trust has been building slowly with my horse over the past year and I feel more connected to him as I better understand how to get him checked into me when he's spooking. It's not an overnight change and we have much room to grow (as this never stops). But, I feel a much stronger connection with my horse as I've been able to bring more confident support to him with the anxiety managing skills I've learned to apply in riding. Staying calm and not sending my anxiety energy to him is key and the biggest challenge for me. Lisa supported me, listened to me and validated what I was feeling. She gave tools and homework to work through anxious feelings. It really never goes away, but with practice, can feel less overwhelming. Having a coach to talk to who understands what you are feeling is freeing and helps to unlock those feelings so you can lean into them and grow.

{Lisa came to Morrisville State College in my sophomore year, 1998. I didn’t have a lot of contact with her, but she taught an elective, basic dressage class that I had decided to enroll in. That class gave me more confidence in my riding and made it fun again. Lisa became the head instructor of the hunt seat specialization at Morrisville for my junior year, and that was a major factor in staying for the then brand new Bachelor’s Degree program. My final two years at Morrisville were so busy but well worth it. I learned so much under Lisa’s tutelage and watchful eye. She gave me the confidence and motivation to join the hunt seat IHSA team after not having made the team in my freshman year. At my final IHSA show, I was first in the flat and third over fences. Lisa also gave me the confidence to mentor others. As the only junior in the program at the time, I was expected to manage the underclassmen while doing barn duty, as well as manage most of the care for several of my project horses. Now, I am a professional and USHJA certified trainer, and the coach of Brockport College’s IHSA team and a young IEA team, managing and owning my own facility that we’ve built from the ground up. I use many of the exercises that Lisa used with us. I have her out every year for a clinic and my students all rave about her. She builds confidence, helps the rider think through a problem, and is a wonderful coach. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Lisa’s help and I’m so grateful for her continued influence!

{My students struggle with nerves and anxiety before classes, especially those doing IEA, and I needed some tools to help them. Not only did Lisa address riding issues that may make riders feel less confident in the ring, she also gave them tools to help their mental wellbeing. They now have tools to deal with both the mental and physical issues in riding both at the barn and away at shows. We’ve had Lisa back a few times since our first clinic and every time we all walk away with new ideas to combat anxiety as well as new things to work on with our riding.

{St. Lawrence Stables was proud to host Lisa Eklund this past weekend for a clinic on Mindfulness while riding. Her teaching on breath work, body scan, deep connection between horse/rider, mindful riding and more created major “ah-ha” moments for each rider and auditor during their time with Lisa on Saturday. Our riders now have new tools in their tool box to use while riding at home and in competition, and a new outlook on their time in the saddle. What a great day of barn friends, excellent conversations and new learning! We highly recommend her to every discipline of riding!

{My daughter and I took a ‘mindful equestrian’ clinic with Lisa. Little did we realize how much our riding concerns, and habits, were so conditioned by the way we thought and spoke to ourselves! She taught us how to verbalize both our successes and challenges as we performed a task, empowering both of us to recognize, and potentially change, our cues to our horses and our relationship to them. We left the session feeling more in control of our riding. We highly recommend ‘mindful’ riding!

{I met Lisa in a clinic I participated in at Platinum Stables, a stable I ride at. I read up on information about Lisa, and knew immediately that I wanted to be apart of the clinic. I am very glad I did. For about a year now, I have been struggling a lot of fears for riding a horse, especially jumping. I had a rough fall two winters ago and ever since have been scared to jump a horse. Lisa helped me understand that I can’t fight my fear, that I have to befriend it. That I have to accept that it is there, and understand that my fears are real. My confidence level has since increased, because I grew to understand that my fears are legitimate and that they’re just something that I can’t keep pushing away. I have to work with them, and continue to work harder. Thank you very much Lisa for coming and teaching many students at Platinum Stables many different lessons. I hope to see you soon!

{Lisa has been doing clinics at our facility for a few years now and I always look forward to them and walk away with something new to work on and a better insight to problems I have when riding. Though I have no nervousness or fear when I ride I tend to ride too much and over think things therefore getting in my horse’s way. Lisa has helped me find other ways to channel my energy when I ride so that I can ride smarter instead of harder and allow my horse to do her job freely. She’s very kind and personable and very easy to understand and work with. I would very much recommend her clinics and will be doing more with her in the future. My horse and I have become a better in-sync team since working with Lisa and look forward to using what we’ve learned in the show ring and at home!

{I remember telling Lisa that I thought I was doing pretty well for an old lady beginner. Her comment was keep your cup half full. Her comment really perplexed me as I thought I was being positive about my progress. It finally dawned on me that my comment was passive aggressive cup half empty. This was a turning point. No need to compare myself to others. I needed to stop making excuses about my (lack of) riding skills. I now focus more on what is getting better and on what I am actually learning. When something doesn’t go right I use it to learn from instead of put myself down. This results in less stress (mentally and physically) and a lot more fun as I learn to ride AND in everyday life. Concrete results- I see the progress in myself and my horse and continue to have a blast! On the days when things aren’t going well, or there is a frustration, feelings of doubt, I remind myself, “cup half full” which keeps me from falling into a funk of hopelessness and/or failure. I am more relaxed, less self-conscious, laugh more and am a much happier rider person. Thanks Lisa!

{I feel I have gained a better acceptance for being where I am at with my horse. I don't feel that intense stress or pressure to be perfect and honestly, I am able to enjoy my time at the barn and riding so much more. I was able to apply many of Lisa's teachings about riding and mindfulness to my day to day and what a big help. Lisa's teachings go so much further than ones relationship with the horse and helps us humans turn in to ourselves to find the solution to most all of our 'issues'.

{I met Lisa Eklund as a student at Morrisville State College, when I was entering the Equine Science and Management Program as a transfer student. While riding and training under her watchful eye, we often had to just get it done! Having a combination of green horses, horses with varying pasts, and seasoned show veterans, we were instructed to ride them all as if they were good, moving forward through and out of the turn, looking where we are going, and riding off our eye. Establishing this mindset early on brought success, and when we doubted it is when the issues would arise. Now that I have left this program, and I have ventured into a different aspect of the equine industry, I can tell you that this philosophy still holds true. I have been successful as a rider, as a farm manager, and now in the retail sector of the industry, and the same principles apply: look forward, move forward, and keep your eyes up!

{I have had the pleasure of getting to know Lisa since 2013. Her mindful approach to teaching and life in general really hit home with me. She has acted as a mentor as I grow my business, Affinity Farm, Inc. Her guidance is always upbeat, concise, and inspiring. She has helped me to look at my life holistically and find areas where I need to focus and strengthen. Lisa has also conducted clinics for my students and IEA team. She teaches with patience, clarity, and directness. Students come away feeling inspired and challenged.

{I participated in one of Lisa’s Equine Professionals Mastermind groups. A group of professionals spoke on a conference call weekly. Lisa was a great coach and helped us feel comfortable sharing and discussing our businesses and ways we could grow. Lisa created an environment that allowed for a great experience for all of us. It was a wonderful experience, friends were made and the networking with other professionals was invaluable. We all need guidance in our lives and I really enjoy Lisa’s approach as a coach. I am looking forward to working with her again in the future. I highly recommend Lisa and the Mindful Equestrian to anyone from amateurs to professionals.
